Medal of Horticulture 2012
Hans Borbonus, Cloverdale Nursery
Hans Borbonus has spent 50 + years and counting
in the horticulture industry; in fact nearly his whole life has
been devoted to his craft. He ushered in the Art of Landscape
for Boise and many other places in the state; no longer could
it be just a tree or two and some grass.
His is a truly an American Story. Born in Germany before WWII,
he immigrated to this country in his mid 20s, became an American
citizen and with hard work and a little luck along the way has
seen the success we all believe is possible in this country. What
we call “The American Dream.”
Hans came to Boise in 1959 and started doing lawn and garden maintenance
upon his arrival; with his 2 brothers for a time. In the mid 60’s
he moved to the current Cloverdale Nursery location which is now
about 80 acres. Soon after he started the first sod farm in the
Intermountain west, possibly the entire Northwest. Press
Release.

The
Legacy of Leaves Award...
Each year, the Idaho
Nursery and Landscape Association (INLA) presents an award to
the community who match the Arbor Day Grant they receive with
city funds to accomplish the best project. The INLA, in partnership
with the Idaho Department of Lands, administers the Arbor Day
Grant Program to assist communities with the celebration of Arbor
Day in Idaho. Funding comes from donations provided by Avista
Power, Idaho Power and Rocky Mountain Power. The criteria used
to determine the winner of the award are: (1) the dollar amount
leveraged with the grant funds, (2) uniqueness of the Arbor Day
celebration, and (3) support by local volunteers. The award is
named the “Legacy of Leaves” to recognize the contribution
that trees make to the communities in which they are planted.

of Leaves 2012
City of Ammon, Ken Knoch
This year, the city of Ammon is
the recipient of this prestigious award. Ammon is developing a
13 acre park whose original intended use was simply a storm retention
pond. To benefit the citizens of the community, Ken Knoch, city
parks and recreation supervisor, designed a multiple use park
that includes an 18 hole disc golf course, tennis courts, basketball
courts, a dog park and also a walking path.
Ammon’s Arbor Day involved the planting of 135 trees. Besides
city employees, there were 38 volunteers including 13 youth. The
$300 grant leveraged $4607 in plant material, $1015 in volunteer
time, totaling a project valued at $5622!
Grant recipients are encouraged to purchase plant material with
grant dollars from INLA members, thus strengthening the relationship
between cities and the Green Industry. Ammon will receive the
award at the INLA’s annual luncheon at the Idaho Horticulture
Expo. Press Release.
